Plan Your Visit

With over 42,000 acres of hills and ridges, Almaden Quicksilver Park has some of the best trails for hikers and mountain bikers to be found anywhere. There are 37 miles of hiking trails, with 30 of them open to horses and 16.6 to bikes. Many of the trails pass through what remains of the park's mining history, including old mine shafts and furnace sites.

Almaden Quicksilver Park is on Los Capitancillos Ridge in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains and covers a transition between the flat Almaden Valley and the much higher Sierra Azul range to the west (home to Mt. Umunhum). As such, be prepared for hills — there are virtually no flat trails in the park. Most trails have at least a few hundred feet of ascent or descent in every mile, except for those along the top of the park, which require a lot of climbing to reach. So be prepared with water and snacks and make sure you have a map or know the route well.

There are five entrances to Almaden Quicksilver Park; the most popular is the McAbee entrance located off Camden Avenue, with others a relatively short drive away. The park does not have a visitors center as such, but information about the park is available at the Casa Grande on New Almaden Road, not far from the Hacienda entrance.
